چکیده

The cultural heritage knowledge domain is often characterized by complex semantic structures and a great lot of legacy information, possibly scattered on the Web that is not always properly structured. Thus, to achieve proper reasoning about this kind of knowledge one needs first a rather expressive model of representation that would also accommodate for its web distributed nature; and secondly a set of techniques that would allow for its intelligent and productive manipulation. The former can be served by the CIDOCCRM which we first transform to the Semantic Web standard language, OWL and then augment with more expressive structures, possible only after this transformation. To show the latter we conduct a series of experimental inferences based on this CRM augmented form, using our Knowledge Discovery Interface. Our results clearly demonstrate the potential as well as the limitations of such an approach.

Ontology-based Knowledge Acquisition through Semantic Profiling. An Application to the Cultural Heritage Domain

Ontologies on the Semantic Web form a basis for representing human-conceivable knowledge in a machine-understandable manner. Ontology development for a specific knowledge domain is however a difficult task, because the produced representation has to be adequately detailed and broad enough at the same time. The CIDOC-CRM is such an ontology, pertaining to cultural heritage, which we align to the...

Context-Aware Cultural Heritage Environments

Nowadays, cultural heritage environments, like museums, archaeological sites, cultural heritage cities, city authorities, etc, select to disseminate and present the artefacts and relevant content that they have gathered and preserved for years not only via traditional exhibitions but also through the web and multimedia applications. The aggregated content is extensive both in topics and in dept...

Representation and management of ontologies in cultural heritage domain

The aim of this work is to present a complex, web-based virtual museum application, integrating several tools for flexible management of heterogeneous and highly structured knowledge. All the used tools are compliant to W3C's standards. In particular, the complex network of associations and relations among concepts and objects (as typically found in a virtual museum environment) has been faithf...

This thesis is set in a research e ort that aims to model sociocultural and temporal aspects to allow Senegalese communities to share and to co-construct their sociocultural knowledge. Indeed, with the globalization it is very common to meet African youth and particularly Senegalese youth knowing more about the geography of the West than their own countries. Thus, to refresh the memory of our f...

Approximate assertional reasoning over expressive ontologies

In the Semantic Web, ontologies provide the required vocabulary for a meaningful and machine-understandable interpretation of data. Nowadays, expressive ontologies are usually written in the W3C standard language called the Web Ontology Language (OWL). In order to leverage the full power of OWL for emerging Semantic Web applications, ontology reasoning holds a key position by allowing access to...
